What is BRP registration in the Netherlands and why is it needed in 2026?
If you are planning to live and work in the Netherlands, the first thing you need to understand isBasisregistratie Personen (BRP), commonly referred to as address registration. Without it, you will be unable to do almost anything legally in the country.
What exactly is the BRP?
The BRP is the central government database of everyone living in the Netherlands. When you register at an address with the municipality (gemeente), your details are entered into this register. Your official address for all public bodies — tax authorities, immigration services, banks and employers — is drawn from there.
Why is living without registration almost impossible?
Here is a practical list of things you cannot do without BRP registration in 2026:
- Obtain aBSN (Burgerservicenummer)
- Open a bank account (ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank)
- Apply for a visa, residence permit or permanent residence
- Arrange health insurance
- Receive tax refunds and benefits
- Register a vehicle
- Receive up to €500 per month in commuting allowances
How do you officially check your registration?
The easiest method is to request anuittreksel over inschrijfadres. You can do this online through the government portal or at a municipality.
